MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet that lets you access blockchain applications and web3. To log in, download MetaMask or use the browser extension.

If You Already Have MetaMask Installed

  1. Open MetaMask Extension:

    • Click on the MetaMask icon in your browser's toolbar. This icon usually appears as a small fox face in the top right corner of your browser.

  2. Unlock MetaMask:

    • Enter Your Password: Type in the password you created when you first set up MetaMask.

    • Using the Seed Phrase: If you’ve forgotten your password or are using MetaMask on a new device, click on "Restore from seed phrase" or similar wording. Enter your 12-word seed phrase in the correct order and set a new password.

  3. Access Your Wallet: Once unlocked, you will see your wallet interface with your Ethereum account details, including your balance and transaction history.

If You Need to Install MetaMask

  1. Download and Install MetaMask:

    • Go to the official MetaMask website: MetaMask

    • Click on "Download" and choose the version compatible with your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or Edge).

    • Follow the browser-specific instructions to add the MetaMask extension.

  2. Setup MetaMask:

    • After installation, click on the MetaMask icon in your browser's toolbar to open it.

    • Click "Get Started."

    • You will be presented with two options: "Import Wallet" and "Create a Wallet."

      • Create a Wallet: If you are new to MetaMask, select "Create a Wallet." Follow the prompts to create a password.

      • Important Step: You will be given a 12-word seed phrase. Write this down on paper and store it securely. This seed phrase is crucial for recovering your wallet if you lose access to it.

    • Confirm your seed phrase by selecting the words in the correct order.

Logging in After Setup

  1. Open MetaMask Extension:

    • Click on the MetaMask icon in your browser's toolbar.

  2. Enter Password:

    • Type in the password you created during the initial setup.

  3. Access Your Wallet:

    • Once you’ve entered the correct password, you will be taken to your wallet’s main interface. Here you can view your account balance, send and receive cryptocurrency, and interact with decentralized applications (dApps).

Restoring an Existing Wallet

  1. Open MetaMask:

    • If MetaMask is already installed, click on the icon in the browser toolbar.

  2. Select “Import Wallet”:

    • This option is usually available on the initial setup screen.

    • Enter your 12-word seed phrase in the correct order.

  3. Set a New Password:

    • After entering the seed phrase, you will be prompted to create a new password for your wallet.

  4. Complete the Setup:

    • Follow the remaining prompts to finish the setup. You will then be logged into your restored wallet.

Security Tips

  • Never Share Your Seed Phrase: The seed phrase is the master key to your wallet. Anyone with this phrase can access your funds. Store it securely offline.

  • Use a Strong Password: Ensure your MetaMask password is strong and unique. Avoid using easily guessable passwords.

  • Backup Your Seed Phrase: Write down your seed phrase and store it in a safe place. Do not store it digitally or share it with anyone.

  • Consider a Hardware Wallet: For added security, especially if you are handling significant amounts of cryptocurrency, use a hardware wallet in conjunction with MetaMask.
